Kinga Kelemen, founder of the sustainable slow fashion brand Lanelka, shared her entrepreneurial journey and insights on sustainability in business as part of the RE-FEM Talk series, on International Women’s Day, 2025. The conversation was moderated by Orsolya Gergely, PhD, Associate Professor at SAPIENTIA University
Kinga Kelemen’s commitment to reducing waste led to the creation of a brand based on upcycling and circular economy principles. Starting with repurposed wool sweaters and deadstock fabrics, she built a business that minimizes textile waste while offering high-quality, eco-friendly clothing. Kinga Kelemen highlighted the importance of made-to-order production to avoid overproduction, as well as sourcing materials from existing supplies rather than manufacturing new ones. She also emphasized that small businesses often adopt sustainability out of necessity, using available resources creatively to reduce environmental impact.
The discussion also touched on the role of women in sustainability and entrepreneurship. Kinga noted that women often make household decisions that influence sustainability and bring this perspective into their businesses. She stressed the importance of workplace flexibility, particularly for working mothers, and shared her experiences in fostering a supportive environment for women. Additionally, she highlighted the value of community and mentorship, particularly through the example of Hungarian-speaking women entrepreneurs’ association in Transylvania, which provides networking and guidance.
The RE-FEM Talk concluded with a reflection on the importance of integrating sustainability into business strategies, regardless of size or industry. Kinga encouraged entrepreneurs to remain true to their values, seek innovative ways to minimize environmental impact, and connect with like-minded customers. By prioritizing sustainability, businesses can contribute to a more responsible and resilient economy while fostering positive social change.
A heartfelt thank you to Kinga Kelemen for sharing her valuable insights and experiences, and to Orsolya Gergely for facilitating such an engaging and meaningful discussion.
